The three individual license files can be downloaded and installed as one zip file. You will need administrator rights on your computer. To install for yourself, you should download version 14.3.0, not the newer ones, from and choose the appropriate installer for your computer. Our license only covers versions up until 14.3.0. Mnova is being made available in the campus cloud desktop PC services under 'COSE" and can be installed on request on campus PCs and user laptops. It uses a 'floating' network license so can be installed on campus or personal computers. This is available to all staff and students, for PCs, Mac and Linux. Further research should thus focus on increasing the stability of this technique.In summer 2021 Chemistry purchased a permanent site license (campus-wide) for the Mnova NMR package, including the qNMR and Reaction Monitoring modules. Final results showed a desirable accuracy in three out of four sample waters, but standard deviation of samples remained higher than would be desirable.
Deuterium peak areas were more divergent for higher integral limits, while for protons the change in precision was not as significant. Results showed a wide spread in peak area between different measurements, which was affected by integration area and waiting time before the first experiment, among other factors. Measurements were performed with a set of waters and then calibrated. Initially no reference compound was used, and later acetonitrile was added as an internal reference with a customised isotopic abundance. Thus, quantitative deuterium isotopic abundance experiments were performed and analysed using MestReNova software.
The use of NMR in this field instead of more conventional alternatives like mass spectrometry would offer several advantages, such as site-specific information and non-destructive measurements. The study of isotopes, and particularly water, has a variety of applications, ranging from food authentication and medicine to climate science.
The aim of this project is to explore whether this could be applicable to water isotope research at the University of Groningen. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance can nowadays be used to quantitatively measure isotopic concentration of samples.
